B.J. Surhoff had a solid if not spectacular 19 year big league career finishing with over 2,300 hits. In 1985, the Milwaukee Brewers made Surhoff the top overall pick of the draft.
Some three years later, Surhoff helped Team Streak win 13 straight games to the open the season. Surhoff was a popular Brewer who also starred for the Orioles and Braves.
This Mizuno model CE-5N glove was used by Surhoff during his days with the Brewers. Authentication is secured with a letter signed by a former Brewers bullpen catcher. Worth special mention is "Relax" and "Step & Throw" written on the back of the webbing in black marker. These subtle reminders helped Surhoff gun down countless runners during his Brewer career. Additional padding is featured on the inner pocket, more for comfort than anything. Some of the padding has pulled away on inside.
"World Win Professional" is stamped on the inside. "Surhoff 5" is written on the thumb and pinkie in black marker. With reference to the '89 Fleer card, the writing above the Mizuno label on the thumb appears to be similar to that on the card although it is not a match.
The glove shows tremendous use and served the Brewers backstop for at least one season if not more. Catcher's mitts are exceedingly hard to find because they are usually used until their big league life is extinguished and then passed down to other big league hopefuls.
