Offered is a Houston Cougars Phi Slama Jama warm up suit dating to circa their 1983-84 season with both the jacket and pants signed by Hall of Fame center Akeem Olajuwon. Russell Athletic size 46 tag sewn in collar of jacket with "GO" handwritten, likely for junior forward Gary Orsak, while the pants are size 36 with "RW" handwritten, likely for freshman forward Rickie Winslow. Although mismatched, this set was worn by Olajuwon. After final college game, he gifted this to the team's dentist. It was stated this was worn by Olajuwon and was his personal warmup set. It was documented that college and even some pro players all would share warmup gear. With respect to the autograph, when he first arrived on campus, the college staff referred to him as "Akeem". Numerous period newspaper accounts from major sources list his as "Akeem". Being from Nigeria and not wanting to make waves, "Hakeem" went with the flow, and even signed his name that way during his college career. Moderate wear.
Due to its early signing and no known exemplars, JSA deemed the autograph as inconclusive. MEARS Auctions will provide a letter chronicling the fact the warm suit was gifted and personally autographed by the team dentist.
