Style: Home knit 2-button shirt issued by the Atlanta Braves to be worn during the 1972 season. Ralgan sleeves with a mid bicep cut sleeve. 1972 was a unique, one year style identified by the 2 button front. Braves & 44 found on front and reverse of the shirt. Shirt compares favorably to period images.
Tagging (Sand Knit): Per the MEARS tagging database, this Sand Knit tag dates from the 1970-1974 era. Sand Knit was the correct supplier of shirts to the 1972 Atlanta Braves team. This shirt exhibits the original presence of three tags:
Top: Designed & Tailored Exclusively for the Atlanta Braves
Middle: Size 40, Sand Knit
Bottom: Missing but outline clearly visible. This bottom tag would have been the “Aaron”, “year”, “set”.
Size 40: Aaron was documented as wearing size 42 during this era along with size 40 which is documented during the 1970 season.
Wear: Shirt exhibits heavy game wear.
Final Grade: When examined for the five categories of examination per the Official MEARS worksheet, this shirt compares favorably to the categories of examination. The missing collar tag (minus 1) is the only deduction, thus we awarded this shirt the MEARS A9 grade.
This is the only 1972 Hank Aaron home jersey featuring this rare one year design examined by MEARS. Hank Aaron was quickly approaching Babe Ruth’s 714 homerun record and this shirt was worn during the pursuit. Investment grade quality of this highly desirable player.
