Dave Grob’s Comments and Working Notes for:
1971 Marty Pattin Milwaukee Brewers Home Jersey

Size: The jersey is tagged as and measures as a size 42. This was confirmed both through measurement across the chest and comparing it with on hand period Wilson products in sizes 40, 42, and 44. Period sizing data for Pattin by way of the 1971 Brewers Scorecard Program (as of 28 April 1971) lists Pattin at 5’11”; 180lbs. As such, I would consider this to be an appropriate sized jersey for Pattin at this point in his career. (PLATE I)

Manufacturers Tagging: The jersey features a c1967-1973 Wilson manufacturers tag. Supplemental tagging for player and year of issuance can be found embroidered onto a flannel swatch sewn into the left front tail. This manner of tagging and applique is consistent with these examples found in my data base:

1971 Brewers home; Wilson: Lew Krause
1971 Brewers home; Wilson: Ellie Rodriquez

The tagging is assessed as being all original and as such, the garment is considered to be appropriately tagged for a 1971 Milwaukee Brewers home jersey.

Construction/Style: The jersey is constructed of a lighter weight wool flannel blend and is consistent by texture and weave with that of period Wilson fabrics contained in my on-hand library. Sleeve style is set in and the collar and sleeve ends are trimmed in 10mm blue and gold soutache. This is a narrow band that was adopted once the Brewers were no longer wearing uniforms ordered by the Pilots. Lettering and numbering is done in blue over gold tackle twill affixed with a zig-zag stitch. Numerals appear on both front and back, but no player name (either plated or individual lettering) is found. All of this is considered appropriate as confirmed by both period images as well as data base and on period exemplars. (PLATES II-III)

Use/Wear: The jersey shows signs light to moderate use with minimal soiling and surface wear to the twill fabric used for the lettering and numbering. All of this is considered appropriate when considering Pattin was a pitcher who only appeared in 36 games for the Brewers in 1971.

Non-Grade Related Commentary: This is a last year flannel style jersey as the Brewers transitioned to knits for the 1972 season. 1971 was also Pattin’s only season as an All Star. It is also interesting to note that Pattin was one of the few players to be photographed in the “new uniforms” the Brewers were said to have adopted for their move to Milwaukee, yet for some reason the style Pattin was pictured in never materialized. (PLATE IV)

Opinion: In my opinion this jersey possesses all the characteristics you would expect to see in jersey manufactured by Wilson in 1971 for use and wear by Marty Pattin of the Milwaukee Brewers. The garment is assessed as being all original and complete; shows appropriate use and wear given the player, position, and games played, and is free of any apparent signs of alteration or contrived use or wear.

The MEARS worksheet and grading criteria provides for 5 categories for which points may deducted, I found no reasons to deduct points.

As such, the final grade for this jersey bearing hologram #313168 is A10.
