Forever known as “The Mick”, Mantle will always be America’s boyhood hero. Whether it is his 1952 Topps card, game used bat, or game worn jersey, Mantle is always the king of the hill when it comes to collectibles.
This lot will provide one lucky collector to own a phenomenal example of an authentic piece of baseball history.
Per the accompanying provenance, this cap was given to the original owner in spring of 1962. The time line of the cap and location, the Bronx, indicates the cap was used during the early part of 1962 or could have been a carry-over from the magical 1961 season.
Dating: The Tim McAuliffe label in conjunction with the KM Pro Stamp on the leather headband was found on Yankees cap from 1960-1968. In 1969, the Yankees switched to KM cloth labeled caps.
Therefore, this cap is consistent with the 1961-1962 provenances.
Size (7 ¼): Measurement of the actual cap confirms it is consistent with the stamped size. 7 ¼ was also verified as being correct for Mantle during his playing career.
Player Identification (7): A vintage 7 appears on the under brim in black marker. The location and formation of the 7 is consistent with other documented examples of Mantle caps which have entered the hobby. Examination with a digital microscope confirms the writing is consistent and period.
Game Wear: Cap shows solid, visible wear.
Provenance: A letter by Jack Flaherty dated June 23, 1987 accompanies the cap and states he obtained the cap as owner of Chevorn gas station during the spring of 1962.
Final Grade: Based on the examination of the construction of the cap, size, manufacture, and player identification, MEARS is confident to evaluate this cap as authentic.
