Yogi Berra’s predecessor, Bill Dickey, is credited with coining the phrase, “the Tools of Ignorance” referring to the shin guards, chest protector, and face mask worn by catchers. The catcher’s mask is the single most identifiable piece of equipment associated with the position. For this lot, we are proud to offer Yogi Berra’s catcher’s mask, worn during the pinnacle of his career.
Fresh to the hobby, this mask was originally obtained by our consignor from Bill Van Orman Jr... His father, Bill Van Orman Sr. worked for the Nixon administration and had access to celebrities, politicians, and athletes. During approximately 1958-1960, the Sr. Van Orman arranged for his son to meet Yogi Berra at Yankee Stadium. As Bill Van Orman Jr remembered, Yogi was signing B&W photos, and then gifted him with his catcher’s mask.
During the 1958-1960 era, the Yankees won the 1958 World Series, were 1958 & 1960 AL pennant winners, and appeared in 3 straight all-star games.
The mask is manufactured by Wilson, and is stamped, “Yogi Berra, 1514” on the leather head strap. Yogi’s mask’s changed in design throughout the decades. This mask is consistent with images of Yogi from the 1958-1960 timeframe.
The mask remains 100% intact, with evidence of heavy and even game wear. A very prime example of Yogi’s “tool of the trade”. Yogi has signed the bottom of the mask in silver marker and is accompanied by a Steiner hologram. LOA Consignor, MEARS.
