We've all seen the iconic image of the great Babe Ruth, beset by age and years of vice, staring longingly towards his old stomping grounds in right field of Yankee Stadium, the house he himself figuratively built with tape measure home runs the likes of which had never been seen before.
There were many reasons to come to the park that day, June 13th 1948. It was Yankee Stadium's 25th anniversary. Members of the Yankees first World Championship team in 1923 were to play an exhibition game against the 1948 incarnation of the Bronx Bombers. But the real reason almost 50,000 people filled the park that day was to see their greatest hero have his number 3 retired alongside Lou Gehrig's number 4 in what would eventually become the famous Monument Park. They cheered, they sang "Auld Land Syne," and they listened intently as Ruth gave a brief but emotional speech. Just two short months later the Babe would pass away, gone from this earth but never to be forgotten.
