Standing 5’9” and weighing 170 pounds, the compact Mel Ott was pound for pound the most prodigious homerun hitter of all time. While playing right field for the New York Giants from 1926-1947, Ott ended his career with 511 Homeruns and was a member of the 1933 World Championship team.
Per the centerbrand design, this bat dates to the 1943-1949 era. Examination of H&B bat records reveal that the team ordered team index bats during the 1945 season. Those orders did not note the model, length, nor weight. In 1949, Mel Ott’s personal bat records show that on 6-22-49, Ott ordered the 016 model measuring 34” and weighing 33 ounces. This bat would have been available for him as a coach.
Therefore, this bat may have been a New York Giants team index ordered bat, or his 1949 coach’s model.
Final Grade: A base grade of 5 points was assigned for the bat being consistent with the model used by Ott / team index, 3 points for heavy game use, minus 1 for restored handle.
