Advanced bat collectors know that Mel Ott is the missing link to the chain of a complete 500 Homerun Club bat collection. This is the first example we have handled in quite some time. The professional staff of MEARS has reviewed this bat and provided the following evaluation and grade:
Dating (1935-1937): Examination of the centerbrand dates this bat to the 1934-1944 circa. Review of Mel Ott’s personal H&B bat records show he ordered 34” bats during the 1934—1937 timespan. The intersection of those data points allow us to attribute this bat to the 1934-1937 era.
Length (34”): Review of Mel Ott’s personal bat records document he ordered 34” bats during the 1935-1937 era.
Weight (32 ounces): Current weighing 32 ounces, the bat is within an acceptable range to be considered for use by Ott. His records document he ordered bats weighing 33-36 ounces during the 1934-1937 era.
Game Use: Bat exhibits heavy game use, heavy ball marks, and deeply embedded seam marks. There are 13 heavy marks on the reverse of the barrel. Handle is uncracked.
Final Grade (MEARS A7): 5 base points were assigned for bat being consistent with Mel Ott’s personal bat records, 3 points for heavy use, minus 1 for marks on reverse of barrel.
With great color, deep factory stampings, and an overall excellent plus appearance, this bat is a great addition for any collection.
