After a brilliants 23 year major league career, the great Rogers Hornsby played his final 4 seasons with the St. Louis Browns. This bat was issued to be used by Hornsby during the swan song of his HOF career.
The professional staff of MEARS examined and graded this bat, our findings:
Length 34.75”: This bat would have been ordered by Hornsby as a 35” example and is consistent with his bat records from the 1934-1937 era.
Weight 34.3 ounces: Currently weighing 34.3 ounces, this bat is consistent with Rogers Hornby’s H&B bat records of bats being shipped to him and recorded at weights of 32-38 ounces. This bat falls within the weight range requested by Hornsby during the era.
Model H117: Hornsby had two primary models, his standard model, later designed H117, with a traditional Hornsby-flared knob, and his own Hornsby model with a large Ruth style knob. The shipping records are often vague in distinguishing which model was shipped, and unless His “own” Hornsby is referenced it was presumed that regular (H117) Hornsby models were shipped. This bat is the “true” H117 flared Hornsby preferred bat.
Game Use: Bat shows heavy game use, lightly scored handle, with slight deadwood on reverse of barrel. Handle remains uncracked.
Final Grade (MEARS A8): A base grade of 5 points was assigned for bat being consistent with Hornsby’s personal H&B bat records, 3 points for heavy game use.
A great bat from the end of Hornsby’s Hall of Fame career.
