While drooling through John Grahms new book on baseball gloves entitled "Baseball Gloves - Store Model Gloves from 1880's to 1940's" , I thought I had seen just about every georgous baseball glove box ever made and his collection consists of just about every original box known. Then, just one day before the auction, we get a call about a boxed Ruth glove. Sure, we've seen one of those before was the initial thought, that was, until we got a scan of this box. A two hour round trip drive and the glove was in our possession.
The box paper label is bordered with images of baseball players in various poses and touts the "Big, "Roomy Spalding "Babe" Ruth Autographed Fielders Glove" and book, both for $2.95. The box is totally intact and one in which we were previously unaware of it's existance. The box has matching end labels on both sides that mirror the top label. The model is listed as the 222-29 and the paper labels are completely intact as well. Of course, the box has high edge storage wear and some oil spotting from the glove that has resided in there for the better part of 80 years.
The glove is a full size white buckskin model with facsimile signature in the right corner that is faint but fully visible (did not come out in pictures but can be seen when glove is in hand). The glove has been used and has toning, some darker oil spots and some verdigris on the grommets as is to be expected. There is some faded black marker on the wrist strap as well. The glove is nice and it is a signature model Ruth glove but it is the box that makes this a unique find.
