Offered for sale is a circa 1925-31 George Babe Ruth H&B Louisville Slugger game used bat which was manufactured for Ruth's personal use during the mid 1920's, the height of the New York Yankees dominance, and issued during the era of the famous 1927 season.
Dating 1925-31: According to the book, "A Complete Reference Guide Louisville Slugger Professional Player Bats by Vince Malta", the design of the centerbrand is most consistent with the 1925-31 centerbrand.
Length 34 7/8": At its current length of 34 7/8", this bat was most likely ordered by Ruth as a 35" bat. Hand sanding to reach desired weight often resulted in an 1/8" or more deviation from measured length to factory record. A review of Ruth's personal H&B factory records reveal he ordered 35" bats during this 1925-31 era.
Weight 40 ounces: At its current weight of 40 ounces and the knowledge that bats may have lost up to 5 ounces over time, this bat may have been originally manufactured to weigh between 40 to 45 ounces. A review of Ruth's personal H&B factory records reveal he ordered bats weighing between 36 to 44 ounces during the 1925-31 era, and this bat falls within those requested weights.
Bat exhibits heavy game use, as evidenced by ball and stitch marks both above and below the barrel. 3 light cleat marks are found near the area of the facsimile Ruth signature.
Final Grade MEARS A7: With the bat matching known length, weight and model as ordered by Ruth, 5 base points were awarded. Heavy game use accounted for 3 additional points. On the knob the letters KC have been carved, and based on an examination of the area of the knob where the marks occur, appear to have been done at the time of the bats use. The reason for the initials are unknown. An 8" area of the handle has slightly and evenly discolored due to the removal of tape. The carving and the handle area account for a one point deduction, thus the final grade of MEARS A7 was awarded.
