Note: These photos have been updated to show that the bat has been restored.
Dating: Per Babe Ruth’s personal H&B bat records, Ruth was recorded as using a cork grip bat during the 1923 season. The length and weight was not recorded.
Length: Measuring 33” this bat is shorter than the examples listed in Ruth’s factory records at 34.5”, 35”, and 36”.
Weight: Currently measuring 37 ounces, this bat is consistent with what Ruth ordered during the 1920s, which were recorded at 36-44 ounces.
40K: This model was issued as both a store model and a professional version. The store model examples were found with the length stamped on the knob. This bat exhibits the hand turned knob, which is consistent with professional models.
Use: Bat is recorded as having heavy game use, ball marks which are manifested by the way of stitch marks in the wood. There was a heavy section of deadwood, 20”, which extended into the center brand of the bat. The deadwood/crack has been professionally restored.
The handle is now free of all signs of the original factory cork, but the discoloration is clearly visible, indicating its original presence.
Final Grade: This bat was assigned the grade of a MEARS A5. The bat is consistent with a single model that we know was used by Ruth on at least one occasion, (1923). The use was heavy (+3), but -3 was deducted due to the fact the bat does not match recorded length. (60N9999)
