With research led by the MEARS organization, it is documented that players ordered and used the 40K,
cork gripped bat during the 1914-1940s. This fact has been supported by written account, surviving
photos, and noted 40K models ordered by players in the Louisville Slugger player’s personal bat records.
Per the examination of the H&B centerbrand, this bat dates to the 1921-25 timeframe, when Hank
Gowdy was playing for the Boston Braves and later the New York Giants.
Measuring 36” and weighing 41 ounces, this bat falls within an acceptable range of bats ordered by
Hank Gowdy.
Deadwood is found on the reverse of the barrel, with some chipping and cleat marks to the front. The
cork grip remains in excellent condition and nearly perfectly intact. Gray paint is found on the barrel, no
associated with use from Gowdy. “13” is also carved into the knob, with the meaning unknown.
Classified as a professional model, this bat is consistent with respect to model, weight, and length as to
what Gowdy would have use during a professional model game and is issued the MEARS Authentic
grade. (73A0639)
