Ty Cobb (1886-1961),nicknamed "The Georgia Peach," spent 22 seasons with the Detroit Tigers and finished with the Philadelphia Athletics (1927-28). When he retired, Cobb held the record for highest career batting average (.366), most career batting titles (12), and most hits (4,191) until his record was beaten by Pete Rose.
Cobb's legacy as an athlete has sometimes been overshadowed by his surly temperament, racism, and aggressive playing style, which was described by the Detroit Free Press as "daring to the point of dementia."Cobb himself wrote shortly before his death, "In legend I am a sadistic, slashing, swashbuckling despot who waged war in the guise of sport. At the end of the day, Cobb was a winner.
