This lot of 38 photos depicts the 1962 World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees. The Yankees would win the series in 7 games to bring home their second consecutive World Series title.

The Yankees won the Al pennant that year with a 96-66 record. Mickey Mantle won the MVP award and led a balanced offensive attack that scored 817 runs, most in the American League. The pitching staff would post a 3.70 ERA good for the 2nd best mark in the league led by Whitey Ford and Ralph Terry.

The Giants finished the year in a tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the NL pennant and beat them in a 3 game playoff to earn the World Series berth. Their offense paced the league with 877 runs scored led by Willie Mays who batted .304 with 49 home runs, 141 runs batted in and 130 runs scored, while also getting strong contributions from Orlando Cepeda, Matty Alou and Willie McCovey. Their pitching staff was led by Jack Sanford who would post a 24-7 record and a young Juan Marichal.

Designated as a Type 1 photo, this image was developed directly from the original photographers negative within approximately two years of the depicted person/event. Photographers included in the collection include Charles Conlon, George Burke, George Brace, William C. Greene, Alex P. Silverberg, and George Dorrill. Some are identified; many are not but were provided by these world class photographers. Unlike standard wire photos, these images were often hand developed by the photographer and sent to the Sporting News magazine. Therefore, the result is an actual first generation Type 1 photographers print -again, not be confused with the more commonly found wire photo image. News service photos are also included, and in those instances, are identified as such by their respective stampings. Acme Wire Photo, Associated Press, International News, and United Press have provided images to the archives. Reverse images are included for identification purposes. As part of the production process for the newspaper, images may show production notes, photographer's stamps, date codes, and other markings associated with the production of the Sporting News newspaper. In all cases, each selected image is of superior quality, subject matter, clarity, contrast and condition. Each image was archived by the Sporting News and includes the official Sporting News hologram, assuring its origin and provenance. Additional MEARS LOA included with each lot.
