This helmet was decorated by either an USC alumni or super fan as evidenced by the team history which has been neatly added to the helmet.
The top crown is a single piece of leather, with four evenly spaced points attached to its side. These four points are sewn on to the horizontal connecting strap. Due to the manner the four points are attached, an open area is formed that allows for ventilation.
The horizontal connecting strap that fit around the head has two flat ear pieces built into the design. Each ear piece has 9 factory air holes, again serving as a ventilation mechanism. This example has no distinct neck protection.
The front has a piece of rolled leather which serves as protection to the wearer on the forehead. Although unlined, there are two pieces of padding attached to each ear.
The owner of the helmet carefully hand added the scores of USC games to the piece. On the left side is the history of the USC – Cal rivalry, dating from 1918-1933, 14 games total. Other scores and notations are found on the other surfaces of the helmet.
The writing creates both a folk art and football history feel, which is very unique and shows the passion the owner had for both his team and the sport. Excellent overall condition, missing chin strap. LOA Troy R. Kinunen / MEARS Auctions.
