Presented annually since 1993 by the Charlotte Touchdown Club and the FWAA, the Bronko Nagurski award is presented to the best defensive player in the nation. The award is named for Bronko Nagurski, who played football for the University of Minnesota and the Chicago Bears.
This prestigious award was first issued in 1993. To date (December 23rd, 2015) there have only been 23 of these awards issued. To the best of our knowledge, no examples of this award have even been offered for sale.
For this lot, we are proud to offer one of, if not the very first example of this trophy. Before being issued to the inaugural recipient in 1993, an example was sent to the Bronco Nagurski family estate for approval. This is the exact same trophy manufactured by the same company which supplies the award each year to the winners. This is the actual trophy made for the Bronko Nagurski family. Measuring 15” in height, this bronze cast figural trophy depicts a player in a crouching position, knees bent, and hands outright with open hands. Keeping up with the equipment of the era, Nagurski is protected by a leather shelled helmet.
