Who says you need to be 6-3, 200 pounds to play safety at an All-Pro level in the NFL. Johnnie Gray may have been slight in stature (5-11, 185 pounds) but he packed a powerful punch.
The Packer Hall of Famer wore this very helmet between 1980-83. Outstanding use is shown on the yellow shell with scraping on the green/white/green striping. Deep gouges are found on the shell as well from gridiron contact.
Noteworthy inclusions on the inside are: cloth material chin foam padding, Riddell WD1 padding, size "7 1/4" sticker and "83" stamped. The stamping dates the helmet to the end of Gray's tenure with the Pack.
The back has "24" dymo labeled and a transparent warning instructions sticker as well. Gray signed the back in black felt tip for good measure.
Employed by the Green Bay Packers from 1984-2000, Scott Waters had on field access for each game, and mingled along the sidelines with the players. Several candid photos document his presence on the field. This lot originated directly from the Scott Waters collection. Detailed LOA’s personally signed by Scott Waters will be included with each item from his collection. Letters of authenticity: Scott Waters & MEARS / Troy Kinunen
