With an ever growing interest in the career of the "Greatest", we are proud to offer these documented, Muhammad Ali training worn MITRE trunks, with incredible provenance from Wali Muhammad, a staple in the Ali entourage. Accompanying photographic evidence allows us to style match these for the period of 1977-78.
For consideration is a pair of circa 1977-78 Muhammad Ali training trunks worn by Muhammad Ali during training for the World Champions fights on 9-27-77 versus Ernie Shavers and the 2-15-78 fight versus Leon Spinks. Ali wore these MITRE training trunks at Deer Lake during sparring and training sessions.
The style of these MITRE trunks are photographically documented as the style being worn by Ali for his fight versus Ernie Shavers (photo included). The letter of provenance from Ali trainer, Wali Muhammad, stated these were worn during training for the fight, not the fight itself.
An additional LOA from boxing historian Craig Hamilton of Jo Sports is included. In his letter it states,
"These trunks are white satin with brownish gold trim along each leg and at the waistband. On the center front waistband there is a white manufacturer's tag with the name in black, block letters, mitre. Inside the trunks at the rear waistband there is a size label L (large). Adjacent to this in black marker the name, ALI, has been written.
The trunks were part of the collection of long time Ali cornerman and assistant trainer, Wali Muhammad. Wali Muhammad has provided a letter of authenticity with these trunks attesting they were used by Muhammad Ali while training at his facility in Deer Lake, Pennsylvania."
These trunks date to the late 1970's, early 1980's. Muhammad Ali use trunks made by MITRE in training near the end of his career.
The letter from Wali Muhammad states, "My name is Wali Muhammad. I was the assistant trainer for Muhammad Ali from the time of his comeback in the early 1970's until his retirement. During this time period, Ali would train at Deer Lake Pennsylvania in anticipation for up coming fights. I do attest that these Mitre Boxing trunks, size L, are authentic boxing trunks were used by Muhammad Ali while training in Deer Lake. The trunks have been in my possession since then."
