"In 1945 a brilliant program was created by the CIAA, America's propaganda organization in Latin America, to bring the countries of South America into World War 2. A series of political cartoons was designed by Mexico's premier caricaturist, Antonio Arias Bernal, to be printed as a deck of cards and distributed from Mexico to the tip of Chile. But world events shifted rapidly; Roosevelt died and Hitler killed himself in his bunker. The war was ending. What would become of 56 propaganda posters...the product of months of man-hours and thousands of dollars?"
Offered here is a collection of items paying tribute to Bernal which answers that very question. Included are the book "In der Fuehrer's Face" written by Bill Schroeder & M.R. Steele detailing the circumstances surrounding the creation & discovery of Bernal's work as well as a modern reproduction of what the finished deck would have looked like had it come to fruition. Highlighting the collection is a near complete set (55 of the 56 cards are present, with only the 7 of spades missing) of original period poster sized (9.5" x 13.5") versions of the cards. Each poster sized card is hand numbered 1-56 in pencil in the lower right corner. Posters remain in remarkable condition with clean, vibrant colors that bring Bernal's inspired visions to life. Each has a factory fold through the center with a small number of the posters experiencing slight separation at the fold. (63Q0103)
