During the height of the Golden Age of Comics, 1940s, Ken Bald worked at Fawcett Comics where he worked on superheroes such as Captain Marvel, Captain Midnght, Bulletman, and Captain Midnight. He also rendered meticulous work for Street & Smith on both Mandrake the Magician and Doc Savage.
Returning from WWII as a decorated Captain in 1946, Bald met Stan Lee, who recruited his art talents to Timely Comics. Timely would eventually become the world-renowned Marvel Comics. Bald’s illustration credits include Captain America, The Human Torch, Namor the Sub-Mariner, Blonde Phantom, Sun Girl, Miss America, Millie the Model, and Namora, which he co-created with Lee. Ken holds the Guinness Book of World Records for “Oldest Artist To Illustrate A Comic Book Cover”.
This very limited edition print was inspired by the original art which is part of the MEARS Pop Culture Collection. For the print, Captain America is depicted in classic 1940s style with shield raised and fist cocked back, ready for battle. A crashed Nazi plane burns and smolders in the background, with a discarded German helmet laying on the ground. The original was designed, penciled and drawn by Ken Bald. The very, very talented Joe Rubinstein supplied the inking and coloring.
During January of 2017, the professional staff of MEARS arranged for a private signing with Ken Bald at his New Jersey home. Mr. Ken Bald signed this full color 11x17 full gloss archival stock paper print in near mint blue sharpie marker. Each print has been authenticated by the professional staff of JSA autograph authenticators and their official company hologram and matching certificate of authenticity card accompanying this piece. Their unique hologram number is maintained at the JSA website which validates the items authenticity.
