"Chief" Mel Harder, fittingly, was a trusted leader among the often-impressive Indians pitching staffs he served on during his 20-season career. The 223-game winner and four-time All-Star twice topped the 20-season plateau. On the other side of the exchange, Harder managed 199 career hits. Presented for auction is a bat used by the accomplished pitcher between the 1928 and 1931 seasons.

The Hillerich & Bradsby bat's label period is 1921-31. It has a pre-model number and block letter identification - first and last name. Harder toted the 36.7 oz, 35" ash bat during regular season play. It features a handturned round handle and a regular style knob. The bat exhibits heavy use. There are medium ball marks, cleat marks and an "H" shaped crack extending 4".

Final Grade (MEARS A7.5): 5 points assigned for bat matching factory records, 3 points assigned for heavy game use, minus 1/2 for 14" handle crack which runs entire length of bat.
