I don't think there is a knowledgeable game used bat collector out there anymore that does not know the great extent in which the then superior finished Hanna bats were used by major league players. Countless photographs along with the published testimony of Gehrig to a grand jury praising the tempered finish of the Hanna and its popular use amongst the New York Yankees of the era.
This bat was also returned to the Louisville Slugger factory at one time as evidenced by the faint remains of side writing now illegible.
It is a known fact that Louisville Slugger developed their "Powerized" treatment in 1931 based on the superior non checking qualities of the Hanna bats. This bat is made of tempered ash (TA) and is referred to as the model 10. It measures 34" and weighs presently at 32 oz.
Seven of the thirteen models listed in the Louisville records have no recorded lengths and the six that are listed show 35" as the norm with one at 36". Therefore, this bat, measuring 34”, is not listed in Hornsby’s personal H&B ordering records, but may have been consistent with the “not specified” orders found.
Currently weighing 32 ounces, this bat is consistent with the range verified via the H&B shipping records, 32-35 ounces.
To further support the use of 34" bats by Hornsby, we have examined a block letter Hornsby rookie bat that dates to the 1916-22 era (dash dot dash center brand) that measures 33 7/8" and weighs 36.2 oz with the typical flared Hornsby knob. This bat has recently been matched to a side written Hornsby bat from the era, thus providing the hobby with at least one documented Hornsby bat order of 34”. The hand turned knob is specific to professional model Batrite bats. The patent date is often found on Batrite bats from this era, which may have been issued as a store model. The hand turned knob is exclusive to professional model issuance.
As to game use, it is pounded with deep stitch marks on top of the barrel, some layering of wood on back at lowest end of handle, a very dark handle that is a result of much handling and a small chip on the knob. Factory stamps are perfect. MEARS has graded this bat an A7 with 5 base points, 3 use points and minus 1 for the layering and chip. It is a beautiful game bat and always an affordable alternative to a five figure Louisville Slugger. 01095
