Ty Cobb was the greatest hitter of all time, with a slew of batting records to his credit. For this lot we present a fresh to the hobby Ty Cobb bat. This fresh to the market bat was professional examined by the staff of MEARs, our findings:
Dating (1921-28): Per the MEARS Official center brand guide, the manufacturing is consistent with the 1921-1928 era. During that time, Cobb played for the Detroit Tigers from 1921-26, before finishing up as a player manager from 1927-1928 with the Philadelphia Athletics.
Length 35”: Measuring 35” in length, the bat measures at a length acceptable for Ty Cobb to have used during the era. Factory records note Cobb bats mostly by weight. 34 ½” is the most widely ordered length for Cobb, but 35” examples are acceptable as a professional model for Cobb to use.
Weight 38 ounces: Currently weighing 38 ounces, the bat weight is consistent with documented bats ordered by Cobb.
Game use: Bat exhibits moderate but quite visible game use, with ball marks, stitch marks, and grain swelling. Multiple cleat marks are found on the barrel. An 8” area of black tape is present, which is consistent with images of Cobb. It is especially consistent with a 1926 dated image of Cobb, image included. The black tape is placed approximately 4” above the flared knob of the barrel. The tape is applied in a tight pattern and clearly visible on the period image.
Final Grade: A base grade of 5 points was assigned for bat being consistent with respect to weight, model, centerbrand, and accepted length of 1920s Cobb bats, 2 points for heavy game use / cleat marks, and handle tape.
