Following the 1974 season, the Houston Oilers needed a change as even Sid Gillman wasn't able to steer the gridiron crew in the right direction. The team was mired in mediocrity and going nowhere fast.
Enter Bum Phillips.
The man who brought a down home, southern feel to the downtrodden team, Phillips helped elevate the franchise to almost unprecedented levels. In 1975, the team began to wear white helmets, a departure from the blue headgear previously worn.
We believe this was worn in 1975 because of the Riddell creation code reads "10 11 74" which leads us to believe this was made in time for use in '75. The following numbers appear on the inside: "21" (twice), "68", "7" and "76 30". We believe the "76" refers to use in the 1976 season.
Moderate wear is found on the shell with scratches throughout with consistent distribution. The original leather jaw pads are in-place. The Oilers did use this type of facemask during the mid '70s. Size "7 3/8" suspension padding is found on the inside.
