John Brodie (b. 1935) was a star quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. During various years of his NFL career, Brodie led the League in passing yardage, passing touchdowns, least sacks, and lowest percentage of passes intercepted. He retired as the third most prolific career passer in NFL history, and was the league MVP in 1970 and a two-time Pro Bowler. For this auction, MEARS evaluated this shirt, our findings:
Style: Jersey is the red durene body shell with ¾” length sleeves. Sleeve openings and crew neck are ribbed. Three white sleeve stripes are on each sleeve. The front, back, and sleeves have “12” serifed single white tackle twill. The style of the jersey is consistent with available images.
Wilson Tag: Per the MEARS tagging database, the Wilson tag dates from the 1967-72 era.
Dating of Jersey: In 1970, the 49ers first added names to the back of their jerseys. This style would have been worn by Brodie through 1973. The Wilson tag changed in 1973, but a one year carry over would be acceptable. Therefore, based on the intersection of Brodie’s career with the 49ers (1957-1973), Wilson tag (1970-72), and the jersey style (1970-73), MEARS dates this jersey to circa 1970-73. Available images support this as being the correct style for the era.
Size 44: The size (44) is an acceptable size for Brodie. According to other examples that have entered the hobby, his jersey size fluctuated from size 42-46.
Game Wear. Moderate use is exhibited on the jersey with no visible team repairs. The nameplate has been restored, possibly during the period of use.
Final Grade MEARS A8: By evaluating the jersey to the 5 categories of the Official MEARS Grading Worksheet, 10 points were assigned for jersey being correct with respect to supplier, font, lettering, style, etc. 1 point was subtracted for moderate wear, 1 point subtracted for replaced nameplate.
