1980 Rick Monday Game-Worn Los Angeles Dodgers jersey with 1980 All-Star Sleeve Patch –Hero of the 1981 World Champion Dodgers (Traded for Bill Buckner in what many consider to be one of the most mutually-beneficial deals in major league history, Rick Monday’s services were targeted by the Los Angeles Dodgers following his now-legendary rescuing of the American flag from protestors in Dodger Stadium during a Cubs vs. Dodgers game in April of 1976. Monday’s abilities as a ballplayer & clubhouse leader were well known, however his value as new-found American Hero presented a marketing opportunity the Dodgers could not ignore. The following winter, they gave up their much-heralded star outfielder, Bill Buckner, in a deal that served both parties very nicely over the next five years. In addition to being a Dodger fan-favorite, Monday helped the Dodgers win three National League Pennants (1977, 1978 & 1981). Perhaps his greatest moment as a Dodger came as an aging platoon player, coming to the plate in the top of the 9th of the deciding game of the 1981 NLCS, his team down 1-0. Facing Expos ace Steve Rogers, , Monday smashed a two-run homer that proved to be the game-winner, allowing L.A. to advance to the 1981 World Series and a soon-to-be 1981 World Championship! Buckner himself became a fan-favorite in Chicago, contributing heavily to the 1977 & 1978 pennant-contending Cubs teams, as well as winning the 1980 NL Batting Crown, and coming close in several other seasons.) Monday’s jersey displays attractive game wear throughout, and includes the Dodgers-hosted 1980 All-Star Game patch affixed to the left sleeve. MEARS A10. (16R0394)
