The 1984 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIII Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event held in Los Angeles, California, United States in 1984. This was the second occasion Los Angeles hosted the games, the first being in 1932.

In response to the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, 14 Eastern Bloc countries, including the Soviet Union, Cuba and East Germany, boycotted the Games; only Romania and Yugoslavia elected to attend.

The United States dominated the medals race winning 83 gold, 61 silver, 30 bronze. Carl Lewis matches Jesse Owens total of four gold medals. He began his medal run with a time of 9.99 seconds in the 100 meters. His next event was the long jump and his first distance of 8.54 meters was enough to wrap that up easily. His third gold was in the 200 meter, with an Olympic record time of 19.8 seconds. His fourth gold medal was in the 4 x 100 meter relay, which he anchored. He finished with a world record time of 37.83 seconds.

Mary Lou Retton. When 16-year-old Mary Lou Retton won the women's All-Around with a pair of 10s in her last two events, she won over the hearts of America. The gymnast, standing a mere 4’8” tall, entered the final two events in a close raise for the all-around title, trailing Romanian gymnast Ecaterina Szabó. Retton won by barely 0.05 points when she scored perfect 10s on both the vault and the floor exercise.

Michael Jordan made his Olympic debut guiding the USA team to a Gold Medal.

Offered is a collection of memorabilia originating from the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles which includes the following: Lot of two Leroy Neiman 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Items including rare "Official Artist of the Olympics" Leroy Neiman signed & inscribed Poster and Post Card featuring the 1984 Official Neiman Olympics artwork.

* Known for his brilliantly colored, stunningly energetic images of sporting events and leisure activities, LeRoy Neiman was the official artist at five Olympiads. Millions of people watched him at work: on ABC TV coverage of the Olympics, as CBS Super Bowl computer artist, and at other major competitions, televised on location with his sketchbook and drawing materials, producing split-second records and highly developed images of what he was witnessing. Neiman possessed the journalistic talent, as well as the artistic ability, to convey the essence of a game or contestant with great impact, from the Olympics to Wilt Chamberlain, from the America’s Cup to Muhammad Ali, from the Super Bowl to Wayne Gretzky. Offered together in this lot are two unique items:

* 22" x 32" poster commemorating Leroy Neiman as the Official Artist of the 1984 Summer Olympics with original signature by LeRoy Neiman w/ very rare "8-10-84" date inscription. This date is significant as this was the day that Mary Decker Slaney, featured on the poster, was tripped by Zola Budd thereby creating one of the most memorable moments of the 1984 games. The easily recognizable handle-bar mustached Leroy Neiman presented this to poster as a personal gift to his barber at the time. While there are many Neiman personally signed lithographs & posters available, it is very rare and unusual to see one inscribed with a date, especially commemorating such an important and iconic event.

* 5.25" x 8" postcard with original signature in bold sharpie by artist LeRoy Neiman w/ PSA/DNA hologram & COA card AA15407, which reproduces his official lithograph for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

Lot of Three 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics Items including an Official 1984 Participation Medal and two rare posters including the iconic "Stars in Motion" logo by Robert Miles Runyan.

* Robert Miles Runyan was a pioneer of visual corporate communications, the concept of an integrated package of logos, trademarks and graphics that establish the identity of businesses in the public's consciousness. For the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Runyan was given what he considered the chance of a lifetime, the opportunity to compete for the commission to design the official symbol. After 3,500 sketches he devised the ''Stars in Motion'' logo that appeared on everything sold at the games. Of this project, he said: ''What I achieved can never be taken away. I'm etched in history.'' Offered here is a rare and original 24" x 36" lithograph with facsimile Robert Miles Runyan signature featuring the "Stars in Motion" logo that became the trademark of the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

* Made from Bronze, weighing a hefty 94 grams with a 60mm diameter and 5mm thickness, offered here is an Official Participant's Medal for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics in Extra Fine Condition. The obverse bears the Olympic torch with the Olympic motto CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS XXIII OLYMPIAD rests along its periphery. The reverse displays the Los Angeles Olympic emblem of stylized stars with the Olympic rings and the date 1984 just below. At the top of the medal is the inscription LOS ANGELES while the lower periphery depicts laurel branches. In small wording, "© 1980/1984 / L.A.O.O.C." appears at approximately six-o'clock of the reverse. The medal is elegantly presented in a blue velvet case and dark blue box.

* 24" x 36" lithograph of gold track shoes photographed in amazing high definition detail and signed in gold marker by the renowned local photographer Saint Zivago w/ "8-10-84" inscription. (JSA was not able to authenticate the signature)
