Sitting in his office in April, 1961, Lombardi could not get the defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles out of his mind. From his Lambeau Field office, Coach Lombardi was already planning the details to avenge the previous season’s defeat. In true Lombardi form, no attention to detail was left out, and that included answering letters from the legions of Packer’s fans.
This typed letter, written on official team stationary with a green sketch of Lambeau Field and the letterhead address, “Green Bay Packers, 349 Washington St., Green Bay, Wisconsin, Hemlock 2-4873” is also decorated by the six team Championship flags on the bottom margin, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, 1944. Although he could respect the previous six championships won by former coach Curly Lambeau, it was Lombardi’s driving ambition to earn the right to place his own Championship to the office stationary.
The letter is written to Tom Slye of 916 Watermelon Drive, Green Bay, Wisconsin. The letter is in near mint condition with 2 fold lines caused from mailing. The letter is boldly signed “Vince Lombardi” in near mint blue ball point pen and typed below is “Vince Lombardi, Head Coach, General Manager”.
Eight months later, Lombardi would win his first Championship, and earned the right to add his mark to all future letterhead. A truly historic piece of Lombardi era Packers Championship history.
