Ernie Steele played seven years at an NFL level and appeared in two title games. Steele's claim to fame was that he was rostered on the infamous Steagles team, which helped keep both teams alive during the war. Finding a vintage helmet and being able to link it to a player is nearly impossible.
This Spalding helmet was worn by Steele and stayed in his possession until he gifted it to a friend in the '90s. As the story goes, Steele was set to throw this away but someone intercepted it from the trash along with a few other items.
"#69" and "E. Steele" are written in vintage marker on the suspension padding inside. Moderate to heavy use is shown with scruffing on the leather exterior. Bubble ears are present on both sides. A makeshift chinstrap is still fitted on front. A Spalding manufacturer's logo is branded on front along with a number written.
Overall, a stellar piece of NFL history which can be linked to a player nonetheless.
